Raw (Level 0/1) Products

The PBO strainmeter network will consist of approximately 103 borehole strainmeter stations and five laser strainmeter stations. Of these, 20 borehole strainmeter stations and one laser strainmeter are operating as of August 2006. PBO also maintains data flow for one previously installed laser strainmeter.

Data from June 2005 to the present are available from three borehole strainmeter stations and two laser strainmeter stations. Raw data are available in both the native logger format (bottle for the BSM stations and Ice-Nine for the LSM stations) and in standard SEED format. All these data are available from the PBO strainmeter archives at the Northern California Earthquake Data Center and the IRIS Data Management Center. Pore pressure data are also available from several of the strainmeter boreholes.

Processed (Level 2) Products

Two Analysis Centers process all PBO strainmeter data. The Borehole Strainmeter Analysis Center is operated by UNAVCO at the PASSCAL Instrument Center in Socorro, NM, and the Laser Strainmeter Analysis Center is operated by UC San Diego. These centers create cleaned and calibrated strain time series that are stored in XML format at the PBO strainmeter archives.

XML Format Update Version 1.0.1

PBO has updated the Level 2 XML format to include offset information for the borehole strainmeter data. XML data written after January 10, 2006 will include an offset element within each observation element. The offset element will contain the running sum of offsets within the strain data.

The program rdseed.pl has been updated to extract the offset information from the XML files. Version 1.0.1 of rdstrain.pl reads both old and new formatted XML files. Version 1.0 can still be used to read the new format but the offset information will not be extracted from the XML file.
